Yorkshire and the Humber

Sitting directly north of the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber has a history strongly connected to the steel, coal and farming industries. Although still a major player in the UK’s energy industry, the region is still adjusting to the move towards cleaner fuels and cheap steel imports. However, Leeds is a thriving finance and business hub, while Sheffield has enjoyed a strong resurgence in recent years as a centre for the creative arts and music. Grimsby is the centre of the UK’s fishing industry, with agriculture and food processing also providing a major source of income for the region.

Where is Yorkshire and the Humber?

Yorkshire and the Humber sits directly above the East Midlands, and below the North East England region. Along with North East and North West England regions, Yorkshire and the Humber falls within the larger area known as the north of England.

What areas are in Yorkshire and the Humber?

The large county of North Yorkshire forms the northern section of Yorkshire and the Humber. Below this sits West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, along with York. The south of the region constitutes the counties of South Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

Yorkshire and the Humber counties

South Yorkshire

Formed of the districts of Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster, South Yorkshire is the southernmost area within Yorkshire and the Humber. The Pennines dominate the county’s landscape, with part of the Peak District National Park lying within South Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire constitutes five metropolitan boroughs: City of Bradford, City of Leeds, Calderdale, Kirklees and City of Wakefield. Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield were strongly connected to England’s wool industry, with much of their history and architecture dictated by it, while Leeds and the south of the county are more connected to heavy engineering industries.

East Riding of Yorkshire

The East Riding’s name comes from the traditional titles for three of Yorkshire’s smaller regions: the East, West and South Ridings. The East Riding retains the name and is bounded to the south by the Humber Estuary and to the east by the North Sea.

North Yorkshire

England’s largest non-metropolitan county, North Yorkshire is famous for the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks. Middlesbrough and York are its two largest urban settlements, while other key towns include Harrogate and Scarborough.

Leeds from above

North Lincolnshire

North Lincolnshire falls within the Yorkshire and the Humber region, and within the Lincolnshire county. Key towns include Scunthorpe and Epworth.

North East Lincolnshire

North East Lincolnshire is a Unitary Authority Area and falls within the Yorkshire and the Humber region. This area was formed from the boroughs of Cleethorpes and Great Grimsby in 1996.

Yorkshire and the Humber cities

The five cities in Yorkshire and the Humber are Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull, and York. Leeds is the largest, with almost 800,000 inhabitants in 2019.

Pleasant Historic Building with a Comfortable Living Experience

The local area around the residence is generally quiet, with a mix of students, university staff, and key workers. I haven’t encountered any anti-social behaviour or criminal incidents during my time here. The location is highly convenient, being just 15 minutes from the city center, 8 minutes from Leeds University Business School, and 10 minutes from both Woodhouse Moor (Hyde Park) and Burley Road, where you can find a good range of cafés and restaurants. Leeds train station and coach station, the two main transport hubs, are about 20-30 minutes walking distance, meaning an Uber is often the easiest option for arrivals. Parking is available on-site with a parking fee. Bin collections are well-maintained, with separate collections for recycling and glass.

The Court building is a beautifully restored old college structure with a well-designed interior. It features a large garden with a bicycle storage area and two rooftops on the second building, “The Garden,” which was constructed more recently. The apartments are well-designed, offering ample storage and useful furniture. The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher, combination oven/microwave, small fridge, and electric hob, making it highly functional. Both buildings and all amenities are accessible to residents. Inside, the design is thoughtful and functional, with several communal lounges for socializing, though some lounges need minor maintenance, such as replacing lost TV remotes and fixing broken couches.
There’s also a small gym on-site, which is a nice addition, though it lacks essential equipment like weight plates for bench press. Other amenities include a small workspace and a playroom with table tennis, a dartboard, and a small billiard table, though the cues need replacing. The absence of washing machines in studios means residents rely on the laundry room, which can be a bit pricey. Overall, the facilities are good, but a few improvements could enhance the living experience.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

One thing I wish I had known before moving in is that not all sides of the building receive the same amount of sunlight as usual. In particular, apartments facing the back courtyard can be quite dark throughout the day. During my viewing, I wasn’t shown the exact apartment flat that I now live in, so I didn’t realize this aspect until after moving in

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

The management team is very friendly and accommodating. I’ve never had any issues with them, and they’ve been responsive to any concerns I’ve raised.

Just like any area it has it’s good and bad but Moda New York square is defiantly the good!
Everything is local in the area it’s in a great location, less than a ten minute walk from the centre!

Please review your development:

Great facilities, great interior design, issues do occur like any other business but staff are attentive and deal with the issue. And the staff at the concierge desk are absolutely amazing especially Sharri, nothing is ever too big of an ask. She is so helpful and bubbly, great to have a chat with and such a lovely lady I have never seen her without a smile on her face! Charlotte and Lydia are also great, so welcoming and always ready to help both lovely girls 🙂

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Nothing bad but would defiantly recommend getting a air con unit for anyone who is moving onto a high floor apartment especially with pets. As I have a cat and I’m on the 13th floor and because I cannot open my window it was very very hot in the summer!

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Ailsa is 10/10 when it comes to dealing with issues, very professional but also understanding and makes sure all issues, concerns or worries are dealt with promptly!

Comfortable community but apartments could be better

Review Date Sep 2024

Local area is good. I like how peaceful it is. But I wish that the bus routes were better. As I don’t drive I rely on public transport. I take the X6 to work and it feels like a hassle every morning.

No anti social behaviour. Neighbourhood geeks very friendly.

Please review your development:

Building management and property management is excellent.

Apartment design are good but not as functional as it could be. Storage is a struggle in this apartment. The kitchen is also not well designed as there isn’t enough counter space and storage space. The sink in the kitchen splashes everywhere and there is no drain for dishes

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I don’t have enough feedback here as Michael did an amazing job when he was showing us the flats

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Always responsive especially Jadine who was outstanding!!! She was so helpful when I was struggling. I appreciate her careful attention to detail

Excellent staff & Luxury living

There is no more convenient place to be in Leeds for transport links as it is so close to the train station. There are lovely little boutique like restaurants/coffee shops surrounded as well as some well loved pubs. It’s like its own little world around the canal.

Please review your development:

The management is excellent. I have to shout out Ellen as I am very grateful to her for how enjoyable she made the move in process and my first week in Mustard Wharf. I was already very excited to move in and her friendliness and willingness to assist in any way possible only increased my excitement further. Nothing was too much trouble and none of my silly questions were too silly! She smoothly took me through all of the practicalities/logistics, and took her time to explain things I didn’t understand. She came herself to my apartment to listen to my maintenance query and help out in any way she could before maintenance could. I cannot thank Ellen enough and it highlights the exceptional level of service provided by those working at Mustard Wharf.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I wish I had known how helpful and accommodating the staff were going to be as it would have eased my moving anxiety!

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Management have been great and had extremely speedy response times at responding to maintenance queries. I emailed re an issue and had a phone call back within the hour.
