World-famous sights

It’s best-known as the home of Greenwich Mean Time (or GMT), and the Prime Meridian Line of the earth. Millions flock to see where east meets west every year at The Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park; the oldest and most loved of the Royal Parks. This 74-hectare expanse offers some of the best views in the capital from its hilltop peak. Along with ample picnic space and nature trails, it’s got a spectacular art collection, a beautiful boating lake and a planetarium.

Greenwich’s nautical connections

As one of the London Dockland’s boroughs, Greenwich has a rich maritime history, best depicted in the regal-looking National Maritime Museum. The Cutty Sark, one of the borough’s most visited attractions, is the world’s last remaining clipper ship. Built back in 1869 and used to transport tea across the waters from Asia to England; it’s now used for tours and you can take afternoon tea under the hull.

Greenwich Market

Modern day Greenwich life plays out wonderfully at Greenwich Market, where smiley vendors tout vintage clothing, bric-a-brac and sizzling street food. Speaking of food, the area has a top dining scene, with an especially generous helping of sleek brasseries and gastropubs. Head to the riverside for the best vistas.

Travel to and from

Transport is one of the area’s big selling points, and options are vast whether you’re on wheels or water. North Greenwich tube is on the Jubilee line, while Cutty Sark and Greenwich stations have DLR connections to the City and Docklands. You can also catch river buses from Cutty Sark and North Greenwich to London Bridge and Canary Wharf.

The Greenwich population

Victorian terraced houses and reputable schooling have been attracting families here for years. Recently, there’s been a wave of young professionals, putting down roots for convenient London links and waterfront apartments. And that mix of occupants and something-for-all mantra is all part of the area’s charm.

My fiance grew up in Greenwich so we have family nearby and we can both easily commute to work on the jubilee line which makes our commute easy. By the time we move in we are planning to start a family and the excellent ratings for the nursery and schools were also a big factor in us buying here.” – Flora, viewer at Greenwich Millennium Village

Buying and renting in Greenwich

The residential scene is growing steadily. Greenwich Peninsula, a 150-acre purpose-built neighbourhood by Knight Dragon will (when complete) introduce 15,000 new-build homes to SE10, spread across seven quarters. Also arriving is riverfront restaurants and bars, a new Design District, a 5km running track, and a yacht club; not to mention several pockets of green space. The homes here range from sleek studios to waterfront townhouses, so there’s a floorplan to suit all budgets and backgrounds. No wonder this development is rated as one of the best places to rent and live in Greenwich.

“When you live in Greenwich next to the river and the Greenwich Ecology Park it doesn’t feel like full on city living and instead I have the best of both worlds. My commute is easy which was important to me as I can walk and avoid the joys of rush hour! Buses are on my doorstep and the convenience to the Jubilee line, and the ability to get anywhere in London quickly.” – Jack, verified resident at Greenwich Peninsula

Nearby there’s Greenwich Millennium Village, a joint venture from Countryside and Taylor Wimpey Central London. This residential community has a village square at its heart and a gorgeous riverfront setting; not to mention a nursery, school, health centre and a range of shops and restaurants.

Many developments we looked at felt like they were just a faceless high rise and we wanted to make friends and meet like minded people. Greenwich Millennium Village has been perfect for us, with so many facilities on site and the open park areas you don’t feel that you are living in a city. We have also made lots of friends through the nursery and primary school.” – Margot, resident at Greenwich Millennium Village

Great modern development in a great location

Great location, very accessible to Deptford high street with convenience stores and bars and restaurants. Set back off the road so no traffic noise and nice views of the Creek. Also very accessible to Greenwich, the river and Greenwich Park. Noise from the DLR is the one downside of the location.

Please review your development:

Safe, secure, well designed development. Everything you need – bin store, bicycle store, lifts, balconies. Internal design features eg cooker, bathroom as good as you’d expect for rented accommodation. Double glazing is very effective for sound proofing. Only negative is the flats get quite hot – great for winter as very rarely need to put the heating on, too hot in summer.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Buy a fan! Having the windows open at night is quite noisy with the DLR.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Easy to contact and responsive. Never had any real problems.

An average place to be

Review Date Jul 2024

The area is fairly uninteresting but it is reasonably quiet. Elverson road DLR stop is close but other than that transport is limited to buses

Please review your development:

The design of the buildings are rather ugly to be frank. The brightly coloured cladding feels cheap and I would prefer coloured brick for the facade. The rec room on the ground floor is very good however and I enjoy the pool table. I’m very disappointed in how long it took the management to properly prepare the building to be ready in the event of fire.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

The closest cafes/restaurants/pub is either deptford high street or new cross road

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

I have been lucky enough to not require any repairs.

Contemporary flats, not without issues.

There is an increasing amount of housing being constructed in the area, and more amenities moving in as a result. There are a good number of supermarkets and cafes/restaurants within a short walking distance. Good local pharmacies, GP, and nearby hospital in Lewisham. There are good transport links into the city, though it is too far to regularly cycle or get the bus to my job in west London. Local crime rates are high, and this may be a concern for people walking alone at night. Postal theft is extremely common.

Please review your development:

The building has some design issues, though the facilities which are present are good. There is secure bicycle storage and each apartment has outdoor space. There is no provision for a concierge service for parcel deliveries. Given the price of the rent, it is disappointing that there are no communal facilities (gym, etc) given that this is now very common in the area for apartments at the same price point. There is only one lift, though a second lift shaft was built in the building. There is also an issue with temperature regulation. Since I have to keep the windows closed for security whilst I’m at work, my flat is consistently 30 degrees or warmer inside during the summer months. During the most severe of UK heatwaves I found the flat unlivable and temporarily moved in with friends.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Rent will increase each year, and the landlord will refuse to negotiate on the figure given. I have found these increases to be surprisingly high. Apparently these increases are based on prices of similar apartments locally, though they seem to fail to account for the lack of concierge or additional facilities which are common in the area.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Some repairs take a long time. I had a faulty washing machine which took months for them to arrange an appointment to fix. Luckily I did get compensation for this, but my complaint was not taken seriously without the intervention of the housing ombudsman.

Good flats bad management

Very close to Greenwich Park which is a huge plus, great pubs near by. Good transport links to Canary wharf, bank and London bridge

Please review your development:

Overall the flat layouts are nice, however there’s been constant construction the last 6 years, and probably won’t stop in the foreseeable future. Generally property management is terrible, constant issues with main building door not locking, parcel room not working and it always seems like a fight when things has to be repaired.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Construction here is hopeless, it’s never ending and very disruptive. Building management simply does not care about anything.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

In general things gets fixed but it always takes forever
